Learn About Your Land – Webinars in February and March

February 24, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

$30

Learn About Your Land is a UW-Madison Extension Forestry program intended for Wisconsin woodland owners. The series of classes introduces landowners to forestry topics and local DNR foresters.

This series of ONLINE evening classes in February and March will feature the WI DNR foresters from Vilas and Forest Counties. All classes will run about 1 hour with the last 10 minutes reserved for YOUR QUESTIONS.

Session 1 – INTRODUCTION TO TIMBER HARVESTING AND SALES
Learn how to decide which, if any, trees should be selected for cutting and why. Gain an understanding of what is meant by thinning, selection harvest, group selection harvest, clear-cut and shelterwood harvest. Learn the benefits of removing some trees as well as the reasons for not cutting others. You will be introduced to the steps and timeline of a successful timber sale from deciding what to harvest to the final closeout. This workshop will provide guidance on selecting a logger, why a timber sale contract is important and the supervisory steps involved in conducting a harvest.

Session 2 – KEEPING YOUR WOODS HEALTHY: THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF SICK TREES
A healthy woodland provides many benefits. Do you have injured or dying trees? Your woods may look fine, but are they healthy? This session will review the insects, diseases, animals, nonnative invasive species, environmental factors and improper woodland management that can affect the health of your woodland. You’ll learn how to identify the signs and symptoms of sick trees and who to call with concerns.

Session 3 – HOW TO ATTRACT MORE WILDLIFE TO YOUR PROPERTY
Learn to enhance your woodlands to attract a variety of wildlife. This session identifies the four requirements to attracting wildlife to your land—space, water, food and shelter—as well as how you can manage your woods to improve the wildlife potential.

PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. The registration fee is $30 PER PERSON, which includes all three webinars. Register by February 11, 2022 to attend the first week of class.
