Prairie Plant Identification and Sampling
July 25 – 26, 2019

Schmeeckle Reserve, Stevens Point, Wis.


As part of the Plant Identification Workshop Series, this workshop is designed to provide the advanced skills and experience necessary to properly identify and sample prairie plants. The workshop will focus on identifying common prairie plants of the Midwest in both lab and field settings. Plant anatomy, dichotomous key use, and proper sampling techniques will be covered.

At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
-Identify common species by sight 
-Use simple dichotomous keys to identify plant genera and/or species
-Demonstrate field plant sampling techniques

CEHs/CEUs
This workshop is preapproved from WI-DNR Cooperating Foresters for 5.0 CEHs for each day; a total of 10.0 CEHs, and 4.5 Category 1 CEUs from The Wildlife Society.

This workshop is also provided for 7 continuing education credits under SER’s Certified Ecological Restoration Practitioner (CERP) program

Target Audience
This workshop is designed for individuals with some plant identification experience.

Instructor Bio
Sophie Demchik is an associate instructor at University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, where she teaches plant and natural resource courses. Sophie was raised in the hardwood-covered mountains of Central West Virginia where she learned to love plants. She graduated from Davis and Elkins College with a bachelor’s degree in Biology and Environmental Science. After graduation, she attended West Virginia University where she earned a Master’s degree in plant biology. Since then, Sophie has lived and worked in Pennsylvania, Minnesota and Wisconsin. In addition to working for the university, she and her husband own Oak Openings Farm, LLC (which includes a farm and natural resource consulting business), in southeastern Portage County.
